Youth Resources | Ngā Rauemi

Out on the Shelves is, and always will be, about young people. While we encourage schools and libraries to take part, this is really about you! We want to connect you with books and each other, and help you find stories.

Some of the best information we have comes from you. We always want to put you first and give you the tools and opportunities to find and share rainbow stories.

So, we’ve put together this page to give you various ways to get involved both during campaign week and throughout the year.

Get reading, writing and creating!

Out on the Shelves needs your voices! We want to grow the database to represent the books young rainbow people in Aotearoa love. You could write a book review, enter our writing competition, create a crafty page for our zine, submit a book or sign up to volunteer.

How are you engaging with books? Post your rainbow book selfies, pics of your QSA with your favourite rainbow book collection, your personal rainbow book collection….we want to see it all!

Either tag it with #OutOnTheShelves or send us an e-mail, and we’ll add it to our youth reading gallery (which will exist on this page! That is, it will once we start seeing your pics!)

Secret Notes

There’s something particularly magical about finding a note tucked into a book. You can quietly spread the word about rainbow books you love and help other students discover Out on the Shelves by slipping flyers into books at your local or school library.

Just print out this A4 page, and then cut it up into four flyers. You can use them to let other people know about Out on the Shelves and share why you love your favourite book. If you do this, we’d love to see a picture!
