Rainbow Writing Competition | Whakataetae Tuhituhi

Out on the Shelves runs a writing competition every year to celebrate young rainbow voices across Aotearoa.

There are two age categories – Under 16, and 16 – 24 – and we accept poetry and flash fiction (any story under 1,500 words or less).

Winning and shortlisted entries are published right here on our website and celebrated in our annual Rainbow Zine.

Rules and Guidelines

Entries open Wednesday June 13st and close Friday July 30th

Entries can be a maximum of 2,000 words (Recommended 1,000). No minimum. Title not included in the word count.

Entries need to be typed, Arial or Times New Roman, 12pt font and black text.

When entering the competition please be aware that your writing will be available to read by the public on the Out On The Shelves website. To keep everyone safe please do not use people’s real names in your writing. For creative writing you could create new characters, or in an essay you could create a new name for someone you want to write about (including yourself).

Entrants warrant that their submission is original, entirely the Entrant’s own work, does not infringe any existing copyright, moral rights or any other rights of any third party and contains nothing obscene, libelous, unlawful, defamatory or anything which InsideOUT may otherwise deem to be inappropriate, and the Entrant warrants that the submission is suitable for publication on the Out On The Shelves website.
